Many attempts have been made to create robotic pets that present some of the benefits of real living pets with none of the drawbacks.  Several of these attempts have become extremely popular, and perhaps the most whimsical of these robotic pets is the Roboraptor, distributed by Wow Wee Toys International.  The Roboraptor was created by the Canadian robotics physicist Mark W. Tilden, who has appeared on several television programs on networks such as the Discovery Channel, PBS, and The Learning Channel.

Roboraptor comes equipped with a number of sensors that it uses to monitor it’s environment and interact with nearby objects.  These sensors include infrared sensors and stereo sound sensors mounted on its head, as well as touch sensors which are located on its mouth, chin, and tail.  These sensors enable Roboraptor to be a truly interactive robotic pet.

The Roboraptor unit can be set into four separate modes of behavior that will dictate how the robot interacts with its environment.  These modes are free roam, hunting, playful, and cautious.  When in free roam mode, Roboraptor will explore its environment, moving around obstacles and investigating the occasional sound that it hears.  When in hunting mode, Roboraptor will stalk it’s environment and focus intensely on any repeated sound from a single direction.  When in playful mode, Roboraptor will pay less attention ot particular sounds, and will be more willing to nuzzle a hand that’s put in front of it.  And when in cautious mode, Roboraptor becomes incredibly shy, moving away from any source of noise.

When in playful mode, Roboraptor may also provide some fun by engaging in a game of tug of war.  Just like a real dog, this robot dinosaur will grab objects placed in its mouth and pull at them, while a human on the other end tugs back.  The Roboraptor unit may be controlled through the use of an infrared remote control, and some versions of the robotic dinosaur were released with a laser pointer that could be pointed at the ground which would entice the robot to follow it.  The robot has three realistic gaits that it can use to travel at different speeds: a walking gait, a running gait, and a predatory bipedal gait.

The Roboraptor is a great toy for anybody who loves dinosaurs and would enjoy owning a robotic pet.  It never leaves a mess, and only requires the occasional changing of its batteries.  The Roboraptor unit uses six “AA” batteries, and the infrared remote control uses 3 “AAA” batteries.  Young boys especially should get a kick out of this cool and charming little robotic pet, which can be set to roam around and interact with them whenever wished just like a regular pet.  The sophistication of its interactions really sets it apart from many of the other robotic pets available on the market, and young children will be able to impress their friends with their very own robotic dinosaur, which many would consider to be much more interesting than any old dog or cat.  It’s a great toy with plenty of appeal.

When you go through the drive through at a nearby fast food restaurant do you want a robot to take your order? Wouldn’t you rather talk to a human that greets you like a person? Do we want our children to address us as yes sir and ma’am? Does anybody actually want to date the computer from the original Star Trek series? What about something more than marriage?

Are these things to become our destiny? Will robots have personality someday? There are no answers to this phenomena only a lot more questions. How far is this to go? What will become of the human touch? Do we want robots to ask us how our day has went? With robots will anybody ever stand out from the crowd? Will there ever be a Purple Cow with robots?

Will robots be able to Service Customers some day? I did a lot of R and D on robots in the early days and I even attempted to build one now they are everywhere. I work a part time job at a local fast food establishment to get out of the house and I was actually told that if I continued to converse with customers they would have to let me go.

So many people have told me that they didn’t like the robots in all the establishments in todays times. To be honest I did not care much about the job because pay was sub standard, no breaks, always on my feet. I enjoyed being a person though. I pride myself as being the Purple Cow of people, the one who stands out from the rest. I apply this same principal in everything in life. I do not ever wish to become a robot.

I have never seen a computer, much less anything else, that had a personality of any sort except for that which a human person has programmed into them. I have been programmed by life that I have lived can this be put into a robot? do not mean to just ramble on but I am trying to see advantages of the destiny that is becoming of us. Can a robot personality become unique? can a robot have a personality?

I just went to the local WalMart. There was only self checkout available. no one asked me if I had found everything I needed. It only wanted my money then it was goodbye. Now I did see a bagger that had on a funny Top Hat. I bet a robot will never have on of those. At least not intentionally.

In the living room my kids are plating XBox live and are talking about killing a warthog and being mutilated by Banshees. Can a robot ever do this? What about just a computer? Boy, I am just filled with nothing but questions these days. Will robots someday become self aware and recreate better robots?

Why did I write this that is the question everybody should be asking themselves. I just wanted to give everybody something to think about

Despite the importance of the Robots.txt file in getting your website indexed with the major search engines, many webmasters don’t offer one on their site. What is the robots.txt file you ask? If you don’t know, you are far from alone. The robots.txt file is a simple text file (no html) that is placed in your website’s root directory in order to tell the search engines which pages to index and which to skip.

When a search engine sends its webcrawler to your site, one of the first things the webcrawler will do is search the root directory for the robots.txt file. A correctly formated robots.txt file will consist of several records, each providing instructions for a particular search-bot. A record will generally consist of two components, the first is called the user-agent and is where the name of the search-bot is listed. The second line consits of one or more “disallow” lines. These lines tell the webcrawler which files or folders should not be indexed (ie a cgi-bin folder).

If you currently have a website and do not have a robots.txt file, you can create one easily. As mentioned earlier, the files are plain text, so just open up notepad and save the file at robots.txt. Most webmasters can use one record that will apply to all of the search engine crawlers. Once you have opened notepad enter the following:

User-agent: *
Disallow:

The “*” applies this rule to all bots. In this example, there is nothing listed in the disallow line. This tells the robot to index the entire site. You can also enter a folder path here such as “/private” if there is a folder that shouldn’t be indexed. This can be very useful if you are still testing a portion of your website or is a section is still under construction.

Now that you know what should go into your robots.txt file, there are several common mistakes people make when creating these files. Never enter notes or comments into the file as these items can cause confusion for the webcrawler. Also, the format should always be the user-agent on the first line, followed by the disallow(s). Do not reverse the order. Another common mistake made involves using the incorrect case. If the disallowed folder is /private, make sure your robots.txt file does not list the folder as /Private. It seems like a very minor issue, but it will cause problems if done incorrectly. Finally, there is no Allow command. You cannot tell the webcrawler what to look at, only what not to look at.

If you are still curious about the robots.txt file you can find many more complex examples online. Just try one of your favorite websites and look for their robots.txt file. For example you can go to http://www.cnn.com/robots.txt. If you need help creating a robots.txt file for your site, there are plenty of places online that will create the file for you for free. One example is http://www.seochat.com/seo-tools/robots-generator/. Despite its apparently simplicity, this file can make or break your site’s chances with the search engines. Make sure you have your robots.txt file in place and correctly formatted today.
